“A Community in Light: 25 Years of Pumpkins and Connection”

As Halloween approaches, Kamloops once again lights up with one of its most beloved traditions the Pumpkins of Light Festival, now celebrating its 25th year. Hosted by the Open Door Group’s GardenGate Horticulture Program, the event continues to bring the community together through creativity, connection, and light.

When I visited GardenGate, coordinator Robert Wright welcomed me inside their greenhouse, where hundreds of pumpkins were being prepared for the big night. “Right now, we’re surrounded by our pumpkins and other end-of-season produce,” he explained. “This year, we have just under 400 carved pumpkins, made by local elementary and secondary schools, community partners, and our own program.”

What began as a small gathering with around 100 pumpkins has grown into a vibrant, free, family-friendly celebration that reflects the heart of the Kamloops community. Wright shared that the event’s goal has always been about more than just pumpkins, it’s about creating an inclusive space where everyone can come together and learn more about what GardenGate does.

The Open Door Group, which operates GardenGate, supports adults living with disabilities and mental health conditions, helping them gain skills, build confidence, and connect with meaningful opportunities. “We’re a mental health program,” Wright said. “If you or someone you know wants to work on personal goals and be part of something supportive, reach out to us.”

After 25 years, Pumpkins of Light continues to grow. This event shows proof that community, effort and creativity can keep a simple idea glowing for decades.

BrewLoops 2025: A Celebration of Community, Craft, and Connection

Kamloops’ favorite fall festival, BrewLoops, returned this October with a burst of music, laughter, and local pride. Over two vibrant nights, October 3 and 4, McArthur Island Park was alive with people from all over the city, students, families, and visitors alike, coming together to celebrate the unique blend of craft beer, food, and community spirit that makes Kamloops feel like home.

Since its start in 2014, BrewLoops has grown into a cornerstone event that highlights the best of what the region has to offer. The festival brings together an exciting mix of beverage, food, and artisan vendors from Kamloops and across BC; each adding their own flavour to the experience. From award-winning breweries and inventive food trucks to creative local makers and merch, BrewLoops is a showcase of regional talent, taste, and imagination. Whether you’re sipping, snacking, or shopping, there’s something unique waiting around every corner.

This year featured well-known Kamloops breweries like Red Collar Brewing Co., The Noble Pig Brewhouse, and Iron Road Brewing, all serving up their finest creations. Among the local vendors, How Sweet! stood out, a cheerful booth run by two smiling women surrounded by colorful candies, caramel apple cups, and chocolate-dipped strawberries.

Ethan Thompson, a local attendee I sat down with during the festival, summed it up perfectly: “Events like BrewLoops remind us why Kamloops is such a great place, everyone’s welcome, and everyone’s smiling.”

From music to merch, BrewLoops once again proved that it’s more than a festival, it’s a feeling, and everyone’s invited to join in.
